Your Loaf of Bread #29

Lemon Puff Update

Team 5940’s 2026 on-season robot, “Lemon Puff”, has played in numerous events this off-season, including Sunset Showdown, Calgames, and Chezy Champs. Since this bot’s outstanding performance on the Einstein field at World Championships, we has been actively working to improve it even further so that it can compete at its best during these off-season events. These developments include work on Lemon Puff’s expandable hopper, often referred to as the “juicer”, which recently demonstrated its skills during our victory at Calgames two weeks ago. Additionally, Team 5940 has also replaced the shooter hub to resolve some issues with eccentricity, meaning that rotation was slightly off center, to allow our bot to accomplish even more in this final stretch of off-season.

CalGames Recap

From October 16-19, Team 5940 attended CalGames, which was especially important for our new bakers, with it being their second-ever competition. BREAD performed throughout our matches with teamwork and participation, ultimately being part of the winning alliance. BREAD was first pick of Alliance 1 along with team 4990, the Basement Bots; team 6418, the Missfits; and our alliance captain 3045, the Gear Gremlins. Team 5940 fiercely competed through every playoff round and won the competition as part of the winning alliance.

Interview: Mark Larson, Mentor

Q: How are you feeling about BREAD’s upcoming season?

A: I’m always on edge about the upcoming season because I don’t know what’s coming, so I don’t know how we're going to rise to the challenge, but I feel a lot of confidence in the student talent that we have this year. Everyone continues to work hard and make things happen.

Q: What's your favorite type of bread?

A: My favorite bread is a really good crispy baguette, especially with cheese.

Interview: Emily Robinson, Mentor

Q: What's your favorite part about the team?

A: I love coming into the DRG and seeing everyone hard at work on various things – untangling wires, wrestling with CAD, (re)sewing the darn bumpers, designing pins, composing grant applications, teaching other students how to use the machines, banging on various pieces of metal, figuring out the intricacies of Chipotle orders... but also (mostly) all the laughing, competition plotting, non-screen-mediated interactions, and community building. I tell everyone that I LOVE working with high schoolers in non-academic settings. I get to enjoy the chaos and the hilarity, and admire the amazing things you all do.
